Madame Bovary

Madame Bovary is a novel about a woman who read to many novels in bourgeois world filled with minor characters intent on wealth and reputation. Flaubert depicts an early modern world in which the power of the church is in decline, the power of modern science is increasing, and the citizens of France find themselves further isolated from the older bonds of community that held them together. Bovary herself is not a particularly admirable character, but her choice and her self-destruction take on a noble contrast compared to her fellow citizens.
